Kellan MOzzone
Cello, Piano, Flute
about me
Hi! My name is Kellan and I am a professional musician in the Lynchburg, Virginia area.
I grew up near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and my parents noticed my passion for music from a young age. When I was 7-years-old, I began taking piano lessons and loved it from the very start. For the following two years, I fell in love with a new instrument each year: cello at the age of 8 and flute at the age of 9. Many schools do not allow students to participate in multiple ensembles, so I was blessed to be able to study all three instruments throughout grade school and even into college. In 2024, I graduated with my Bachelor of Music in Cello Performance from Liberty University, with minors in Piano Performance and Flute Performance. Although the cello has become my greatest passion, I love to teach and perform on piano and flute as well. I have always felt called to a life of music and it is such a joy!
Currently, I teach and work as the Social Media Director at Allegro Music School in Lynchburg. Additionally, I play with the Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra and the Danville Symphony Orchestra. I also love to perform at churches, weddings, and other events in the central Virginia area. When I am not doing musical activities, I am often at the gym, in the kitchen baking, or spending time with family and friends!
Teaching Experience & Philosophy
I began teaching private lessons in early high school and have loved it ever since. It is so rewarding to share the beautiful gift of music with others and to help people of all ages gain an appreciation for music. I love watching students grow from the learning stage of a new skill, to successfully accomplishing that skill on their own. Over the years, I learned so much from my own private teachers, and I hope to pass this knowledge on to others. My teachers have had such a positive influence on both my musical and personal lives, and I look forward to doing this for others.
I believe it is important to cater the lesson concepts to the needs of each individual student. Everyone is built differently (both physically and mentally), and I strongly take this into consideration as I teach. I also think it is important to supplement the learning of an instrument with additional music-related skills, such as music theory, music history, aural skills, and improvisation. Students should be well-rounded in their musicianship. Although it is better if these skills are learned from a young age, it can be beneficial for every student. Finally, I believe lessons should be fun! It is important to work hard and focus, but students should receive enjoyment from it as well. Music is sometimes serious, and there are occasional tedious tasks we must practice in order to improve. However, the learning of an instrument during our lesson time should be an enjoyable experience overall. Music is a beautiful and rewarding thing!
Performance Experience
I love performing just as much as I love teaching! From my time at Liberty, I have significant esnemble experience, including the Symphony Orchestra, Marching Band, Cello Ensemble, Flute Ensemble, and two scholarship ensembles - the Honors String Quartet and Woodwind Quintet. In my final semester, I was selected as a cello soloist for the first-ever Liberty University School of Music Gala. Throughout my time as an undergraduate student, I have also enjoyed performing with well-known Christian artists, including live performances with Cece Winans, Charity Gale, Michael W. Smith, and Charles Billingsly, as well as album recordings with the Collingsworth Family and the Liberty Worship Collective. Additionally, I gained experience at college as a piano accompanist, playing with other students for their recitals and juries.
For two consecutive summers, I was selected to attend the Wintergreen Music Festival in Wintergreen, VA, where I studied with well-known musicians from around the country and performed challenging chamber music. This summer, I will be working as a hired musician for Camp-of-the-Woods in upstate New York, as a participant of the Adirondack Performing Arts Festival.
Since I moved to Lynchburg, I have performed at numerous churches, weddings, and other events nearby, which is one of my favorite parts about being a musician! I love using these performances to bring joy to others and to get to know the members of my community!
